There have been four major floods in Ellicott City. Since the settlement was positioned near the water back in the day when most machinery utilize water for mill production, the city has been prone to flooding during the rainy or hurricane season. 1868 (21.5ft) It wiped out most of early industry in the valley sparing only the flour mill. It destroyed the lower end of Main Street and killed a number of people living in Ellicott City.
1923 (9ft)
1972 (14.5ft) Hurricane Agnes flooded downtown Main Street area extensively destroying the Ellicott brothers’house and the mill.
