Maryland Heights is one of most famous trail in Harpers Ferry National Park. It’s located in Maryland near the border of Virginia and West Virginia. This hike gives you a great view of the Shenandoah River, Potomac River and the historic town of Harpers Ferry across the bridge in West Virginia. It’s one of the most scenic hike around the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. This particular trail is rich in historical background and civil war history. You can see many civil war forts, trenches, encampments and ruins while hiking on the trail.
It’s best to park at the entrance of the hike near Sandy Hook Road if you want to avoid paying for the $10 parking. The circuit hike takes around 3 hours to complete and the steepness varies from moderate to difficult with an elevation gain of 1600 feet. Overall, this is an enjoyable day hike if you want to get lunch and don’t want to drive far from Baltimore or DC.
