Doubleday Hill is a monument erected in Williamsport, Maryland to commemorate Major Abner Doubleday’s occupation of the hill. During the Civil War, Major Doubleday ordered fortifications and siege guns to be placed on the hill to protect the town and C&O Canal for the Union Army. At the time, Major Doubleday was in charge of the artillery for the Army of the Potomac. The following year he was promoted to Brigadier General and helped to defend the retreat of Union troops during the Second Battle of Bull Run. Months later, he and his troops fought at Antietam for which he was promoted to Major General. Major General Doubleday led the second division and then first division during the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war ended, Abner Doubleday went with President Lincoln by train for the Gettysburg Address.
Doubleday Hill is now part of River View Cemetery. The monument overlooks Potomac Park and the C&O Canal National Historical Park.
