If you can’t make it to Germany for Oktoberfest, you can celebrate the Frederick Oktoberfest at the fairgrounds. Oktoberfest is a festival that began in Bavaria in 1810 as a celebration for the royal wedding. Since it is an old festival, a lot of people dress up in traditional clothes. Men wear Lederhosen and women wear Dirndl. The festivities include authentic foods, dancing, and polka music.
This year there was a dinner special so that you could try different bratwursts and side dishes like sauerkraut and red cabbage. The Oktoberfest celebration also had buckets of beer! Later in the day people participated in the Chicken Dance, and then the Oktoberfest dancers took the stage. There was even someone playing the Oktoberfest horn. Outside of the main pavillion, people were selling crafts and real strudel. The festival also included food tents with more music, and even a tent for anyone interested in catching the football game.
The Frederick Oktoberfest is held by Rotary Clubs in the area. In addition to providing a good celebration, the festival contributes to charities and scholarship funds. If you are interested, you can volunteer to help out next year.
