The Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory / International Latitude Observatory is one of six observatories built around the world in the late 1800s/early 1900s. The purpose of these observatories was to measure the wobble of the Earth around its axis. The building was used up until the 1980s when satellites replaced the need for the observatories.
