Mount Stanserhorn is located in Switzerland at an elevation of 1898 meters (6227 feet) above sea level. In 1893, a funicular railway was built to transport people from the base of the mountain to the summit. The upper section of the railway was replaced in the 1970s by a cable car. From the summit of Mount Stanserhorn, you can view as far as Alsace, France and The Black Forest of Germany. The mountain also has a great view of Lake Lucerne which is located near the canton of Nidwalden close to the border with Obwalden. In 2001, a restaurant was built near the summit which provides a 360 degree view of the Swiss Alps. The world’s first double-decker gondola was opened on the mountain in 2002. The gondola has an open-air upper deck capable of carrying 60 people to the summit.
