Sykesville

24 sec read

The town of Sykesville began as a slave plantation owned by William Patterson in the 1800s. In 1831, the B&O railroad was extended to the area as “Horse Train Stop”, making Sykesville the new end of the Baltimore side of the railroad. In the 1860s, the town was largely destroyed by Confederate troops and then a flood of the Patapsco river. It was rebuilt on the other side of the river, and was incorporated in 1904.

Several properties in Sykesville are a part of the National Register of Historic Places including Branton Manor and Bennett-Kelly Farm. There is even a mineral named for Carroll County which was mined in Sykesville: Carrollite.
