Behnke Nurseries had been operating for more than 80 years in Maryland before it was forced to close in 2019. Its location in Beltsville was the largest retail location, but there were other locations throughout the state. Behnke offered a very extensive selection of indoor, outdoor, garden, and landscaping plants and decor. There was even a large greenhouse devoted to house plants, which was sectioned off by lighting needs of the plants. Located throughout the nursery you would have found a huge selection of pots in all shapes and sizes for indoor and outdoor uses. Behnke was also known for its classes and talks on different topics including gardening, bonsai, and orchid care.
Behnke’s was my favorite place to get plants for growing food and for inside the house, so it was a surprise that it closed last year. It will be missed sorely, since there are only a few local nurseries in Maryland to choose from.
