Chesapeake City is a small town in Maryland with only about 800 residents. Since 1829 the town has been divided into two parts by the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates the canal and also the C&D Canal Museum at the original canal pumphouse.
In 1942 a tanker crashed into the drawbridge that connected both parts of town. Due to the ongoing war efforts, it wasn’t until 1948 that the new bridge was completed. The bridge is a mile long and sits more than one hundred feet off of the water to allow for large ships to pass underneath.
