Gaithersburg, MD was incorporated in 1878 as a town and became a city in 1968. Its name comes from the Gaither family who inherited land from Henry Brooks (builder of Montpelier and owner of a large portion of land north of Washington). During the Civil War, confederate troops camped in the area after the Battle of Monocacy. They then marched to Washington and failed to take the city.
Today, the city of Gaithersburg is home to Seneca Creek State Park and Clopper Lake which connects Schaeffer Farm trails via the Seneca Ridge trail. Following the trail leads to the Maryland Soccer Plex–the former home of Washington Spirit, DC’s National Women’s Soccer League team. The Montgomery County Fair is held at the fairgrounds in Gaithersburg every year.
