St Michaels overlooking the marina

Saint Michaels is located on the Miles River connected to the Chesapeake Bay. It is a small shipbuilding and fishing town that was established in the 1770s, but has history back to the early 1600s. Saint Michaels was targeted by the British in the war of 1812 due to its shipyard and defenses. One of the attractions of Saint Michaels is the Cannonball House which was struck during the British bombardment of the town.

By the east harbor, you can find the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. The museum has a large collection of exhibits. You can visit the 1879 Hooper Strait lighthouse–a screw-pile lighthouse–that used to be situated in the Chesapeake. Many artifacts are scattered around town, such as a replica of John Smith’s Shallop which was used to explore the bay in the 1600s.
